✈️ New Aeronautical Information Circular (AIC) Detected
AIC: AIC 1/25
Published: 2025-01-23
🧠 What Changed (Summary)
NAV CANADA will implement a national policy where Trigger NOTAM—used only to advise that an AIP Supplement (AIP SUP) has been published—will be issued for 14 days (rather than remaining published for the full duration of the AIP SUP, as was done when Trigger NOTAMs were introduced in Oct 2023). Trigger NOTAM contain only basic information and do not replace other NOTAM that may be required in conjunction with the AIP SUP.
- Effective 20 Feb 2025: Trigger NOTAM duration set to 14 days.
- Trigger NOTAM purpose: notify that an AIP SUP is published; they contain basic information only.
- Trigger NOTAM do not replace other NOTAM needed to manage dynamic changes alongside the AIP SUP (e.g., effective times, activations).
- AIP SUP use cases described: long-duration temporary changes (>3 months) or short-duration events requiring graphics; aerodrome construction (situational awareness + NOTAM still required), temporary airspace with coordinates (NOTAM issued with same coordinates for system automation), obstacles/cranes >3 months (AIP SUP; additional NOTAM generally not expected except if operating at an airport).
✈️ General Aviation Impact (Highlighted)
Airspace / Procedures:
- If you rely on NOTAM alone, you may miss ongoing temporary information after the first 14 days; ensure you also check applicable AIP Supplements for continuing details.
- For temporary airspace described by coordinates, expect both an AIP SUP and a NOTAM with the same coordinates (useful for electronic flight planning/portrayal).
Operational Notes:
- Aerodrome construction: AIP SUP provides the illustrated situation; NOTAM still used to indicate what is currently in effect (closures/limitations). After 14 days, the Trigger NOTAM may no longer be present even though the AIP SUP remains applicable.
- Obstacles/cranes: longer-term cranes may be published via AIP SUP; do not assume a NOTAM will exist in all cases (except as noted for cranes operating at an airport).
VFR Impact:
- VFR pilots should incorporate a check for relevant AIP SUP in pre-flight planning, especially for longer-duration construction, temporary airspace, or obstacle information, because the Trigger NOTAM will no longer persist for the duration of the AIP SUP.
